Reunion Arena Demolition Plans Announced

The JumboTron scoreboard at Reunion Arena in Dallas will be part of the first phase of the building’s demolition, city officials announced Friday.

A&R Demolition of Del Valle, Texas, has been awarded the contract to carry out the demolition of the sports landmark that was home to numerous events and to the Dallas Mavericks for 20 years.

The city said Friday the demolition will be carried out in a series of phases. More than 75 percent of the materials, concrete and steel remaining will be recycled, along with any carpeting that is pulled from the building.

When the demolition is complete, the Reunion Arena site will remain an empty green field. The city says its Storm and Water and Environment Management division will oversee all of the environmental aspects of the demolition.

The building will inevitably face some implosion with Dykon Explosive Demolition of Tulsa, Okla., handling the removal of the upper concrete seating area, which will be wired to fall into the envelope of the arena.

“Although it takes time and labor to salvage the materials, A&R Demolition feels it is important to recycle as much as possible to preserve our past and future,” said Stephen Reveile, A&R operations manager.
